Pictured Below are some example combat scenarios that should help clarify positioning mechanics.

Attacking Scenarios[]

In the scenario pictured to the below, two groups of units occupy two of the 3x5 battlefield grids. One side consists of friendly players and the other side consists of enemy NPC's. On the player's side, there is a Guardian (a melee unit) and a Ranger (a ranged unit) vs. a pack of 4 wolves (melee units). Let's observe some combat scenarios for the following battlefield.
B scen 1

Scenario 1 - Melee Attacks[]

Since there are 5 melee units on the battlefield, pictured below are examples of options for the Guardian's melee attacks. Once the Guardian moves into an unoccupied space on the Player's side of the field, the Guardian moves up to the enemies to attack, then returns to his original position. The Guardian's melee range is highlighted in red.
B scen 1-1

The Guardian can attack the wolf standing in the Guardian's melee range without moving.

B scen 1-2

The Guardian can also choose to move 1 space up, and then attack either of the wolves pictured in his melee range.

Scenario 2 - Intercepted Melee Attacks[]

The two images pictured above show the Guardian attacking without fear of being intercepted. The Guardian is only able to attack the three wolves closest to him. If the Guardian tries to attack the wolf in the back row, the wolf closest to the Guardian will intercept the attack. The front wolf will then block the Guardian's attack, and the wolf will stay in its new position until the wolf's next turn. The wolf's intercept range is pictured in yellow.
B scen 1-4

The front wolf moves to intercept the attack and blocks for the back-row wolf. The front wolf stays at this position until its next turn.

B scen 1-3

The Guardian attempts to attack the wolf in the back row, despite standing in the front wolf's intercept range.

Scenario 3 - Ranged Attacks[]

Units with ranged attacks have a maximum range of 5 squares away from the unit. This means that the ranger can attack a unit 5 squares directly in front, a unit 4 squares ahead and 1 up or down, a unit 3 squares ahead and 2 squares up or down etc. The Ranger's attack range is pictured below in orange.
B scen 1-5

The ranger can hit all but the back-most wolf from where the Ranger is standing.

B scen 1-6

By moving to this position, the Ranger can hit every unit on the battlefield, but the Ranger is more vulnerable to attacks.

Defending Scenarios[]

Now, let's look at some scenarios for when the player's side has to defend against the wolves' attacks.

Scenario 1 - Multiple Interceptions[]

For this example, let's assume that the Ranger has high aggro on the three front-most wolves. Being creatures of lesser intellience, they will attempt to attack the Ranger even though the Guardian is protecting him. In this scenario, the Guardian is able to intercept all 3 wolves' attacks.
Bscen 2-0

Pictured above is the Guardian's intercept range. The top wolf attempts to attack the Ranger.

Bscen 2-1

Because the top wolf has to pass through the Guardian's intercept range, the Guardian is able to block him. The middle wolf then attempts to attack the Ranger.

Bscen 2-2

The Guardian moves down to intercept the middle attacking wolf. The bottom wolf then attempts to attack the Ranger.

Bscen 2-3

The Guardian then moves down to intercept the final attacking wolf. The Wolves reset to their original positions and the Guardian stays in his current position until his next turn.

Scenario 2 - Manipulating Interceptions[]

In the previous example, the Guardian was able intercept all three wolf attacks. If they wolves had changed their attack order, they would have been able to make at least 1 successful attack on the Ranger.
Bscen 2-0

The same scenario as pictured above.

Bscen 2-1

Again, the top wolf is the first wolf to attack, and the Guardian intercepts it.

Bscen 2-4

This time, the bottom wolf attacks after the top wolf, and passes under the Guardian's intercept range, and is able to attack the Ranger.
